Legal background of replacement of elevators

[The Act on Safety Management of Elevators] No. 14839 (Jul. 26, 2017)

 

Article 13-2 (Precise Safety Inspection of Elevators)
  • (Above clauses omitted) When pertaining to Number 3, there shall be regular precision and safety inspection every three years from the date of the precision and safety inspection.
  • 15 years or longer have passed since the last completion inspection.

 

Details of items that must be replaced
  • Device preventing door separation (prevention of door separation, emergency guide)
  • The distance between the car/platform door and the jamb shall not exceed 5mm (preventing hands from being stuck)
  • Gearless traction machine/rope brake (prevention of over-speeding, starting before door being closed, dual brake)
  • Automatic placement machine (automatic rescue operation)

 

As the life expectancy of elevators and escalators increases, aging will take place and replacement will be necessary in about 15 years. Then, system capacity or convenience shall be increased or energy cost shall be decreased. The equipment shall be upgraded according to new standards.

Partial modernization starts from inspection to check each component and this enables you to flexibly approach the building interface upon system replacement. This does not produce dust and structure engineer services won’t be necessary. Also, the construction does not generate noise. Also, sometimes, you need to replace the entire system. As for full modernization of old elevators, regardless of presence of a machine room, diversely developed parts and components are provided. What is difficult in modernization is that hoist way size is different by building. Although door space and ceiling opening are different, in order to maintain a building’s support structure, the opening and the support are maintained. If possible, we use the existing guide rails.
